What you should know about Petone Settlers Museum
The Petone Settlers Museum provides a meaningful social science resource for all age groups through the stories of a particular local history that has national implications. In May of 2016 the Petone Settlers Museum re opened, with a major refresh, both inside and out. TANGATA WHENUA PEOPLE OF THE LAND Social Science, Te Geo Reach and explore what life was like in Te Whanganui a Tara before the arrival of the English settlers in 1840. Exploring this history and using hands on STEM activities we might just discover some of our tomorrow entrepreneurs, designers and engineers. Situated on the shores of Wellington’s ever changing Barbour, the Petone Settlers Museum Te Ware Whakaaro occupies one of Fresh Zealand’s most significant memorial buildings the Wellington Provincial Centennial Memorial.
The Petone Settlers Museum receives core funding from Hunt City Council and is operated alongside The Dowse Art Museum. And, back by popular demand, a brand new version of old favorite experience the conditions that European settlers endured to get to Petone’s shore in 1940, in our replica of a ship’s steerage cabin. Educators donate fun, interactive curriculum linked learning programmed for students, Year 1 13. SUSTAINABILITY Science, Social Science Students will discover the ways people have lived on our land and the impact it has had on our environment. Discover the genuine story of two of Petone’s important streets Jackson and Patrick Streets. Appreciate the vogue glamour of Miss Hunt Valley 1968 and feel the raw determination of Petone’s sporting champions. Engaging with the people, landmarks and facilities understanding how we all work together to create an effective community.
SCULPTURE WALK Social Science, Visual Art Explore the ways that stories are shared through sculpture and mural as we walk along Petone Foreshore. To retain up to date on what’s going on at Petone Settlers Museum join our newsletter, The Sometimes Times. Social Sciences Students will explore the museum getting an overview of the people, places and events that have shaped Petone into the town it is today
